BECOME A CERTIFIED REFEREE

Being a soccer referee can be both rewarding and fulfilling. Whether for a young person learning responsibility or an adult contributing to the sport, referee training and development is the primary mission of FL Soccer SRC Inc. (FLSRC). FL Soccer SRC Inc. oversees the administration of the United States Soccer Federation Referee Program within the State of Florida. We are responsible for the development of the appropriate procedures and policies for the certification and oversight of Florida referees, instructors, assessors and assignors.  To this end, FLSRC has established a process to ensure that every person who wishes to become a referee is afforded the opportunity to become registered and certified as a soccer referee with the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the minimum age to become a referee?

The minimum age is 13 years old. Anyone who, prior to July 1, 2019 was certified as a referee and, was less than 13 years old is allowed by US Soccer to continue their referee certification for the 2021 registration year and beyond.

When can I start my entry referee course?

The online course is available immediately upon registration and payment.
If logged out, log back in to the member home page and follow the links to start the online course.

How long does it take to complete the course or how long do I have to complete the course?

Work at you own pace on your own time, but don’t take too long as there are games waiting to be refereed.

When I complete my online referee course with virtual field training, do I have to attend an in-person Field Training Event (FTE)?

The field training events (FTE) are required for all new Grassroots Referees.  The FTE’s are part of the certification process.  Making the transition from the classroom (computer keyboard) to the field is why the FTE’s were created.  Starting for the 2020-2021 seasonal year, FTE’s are offered with two (2) options:  Virtual or In-person.  The optional in-person FTE is usually sponsored by a local soccer club and FLSRC provides specially trained instructors and administrators who follow an approved curriculum to provide each new referee with the necessary skills and knowledge needed for their very first game.  Check with the nearest local  affiliated soccer club for any in-person FTE.  The virtual FTE is automatically included in the Grassroots entry course and includes all of the curriculum taught at the in-person FTE.  Therefore in-person FTE’s are optional.  Due to Covid-19, in-person FTE’s are cancelled.
